Power UP: Carbon Literacy Training with Wild Rumpus

As part of our CPD Power UP Network, the PiCL Team and friends recently underwent some training on Carbon Literacy delivered by Wild Rumpus at Whirlygig Woods. The training is accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project.

What is Carbon Literacy?
Carbon Literacy®: “An awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”

The Carbon Literacy Project is an UN-recognised, multi-award-winning initiative at the forefront of certified climate learning globally. It exists to provide everyone with access to Carbon Literacy®: the recognised global benchmark for climate understanding and action.

Led by their Sustainability Lead, Aileen Ging, we spent the day deep in thought and discussion about the many serious issues of carbon impact and what we as individuals and as an organisation can do to reduce our carbon footprint.

Before the session we had been encouraged to estimate our carbon footprint via the WWF website: https://footprint.wwf.org.uk/#/ which was a very sobering experience and perhaps didn’t bode well for the day ahead.

However the day itself was filled with so much positivity and joy. From the initial warm welcome from Aileen, through a warm up exercise being led blindfold through the forest to the in-depth discussions and thought provoking exercises. At the end of the day the group left the space feeling envigorated and full of ideas for positive action!

A fabulous plant based lunch was provided by Naomi of Floating Farmshop https://www.floatingfarmshop.com/ - a big recommend!

Ideas and concepts discussed included:

  • Normalising positive stories of successful adaptation

  • Art as a tool to enhance connnection with nature

  • Don’t let perfection be the enemy of good!

  • Developing a mindset for climate action

  • Choosing hope

  • Stubborn Optimism

  • How to be a good ancestor

  • Doughnut economics - a regenerative and distributive economy

  • Wilding
