PROJECT: DISTANT EARTH - OUR LADY'S PRIMARY SCHOOL

Our Lady's Catholic Primary School in Fenton, Stoke on Trent - developed a cross curricular activity that focussed on the subject of Space, The Universe and the Environment.  Working with the teaching staff and Years 4 and 5 Pupils, practitioners Kerrie Reading and Charlotte Gregory devised and co-planned a series of trails and activities that incorporated diverse art forms; visual and written, around 8 separate sites that were designated as planets from the Solar System, with the school being Earth.

Working alongside them were Christian Kerrigan and Ruairi Glynn, new media artists who encouraged the pupils to explore physical space, imaginary space and the universe through various workshop processes from design and storyboarding to pressure sensitive video recording environments and telematic marionette performances, done in such a way as to enable the pupils to direct and shape the enquiry.  The physical culmination of this activity was a collaborative design for a floating city.

The project enabled not only the pupils to think creatively and ask big open questions, but it also encouraged greater communication and collaboration between staff members, freeing them up to take greater risks in their teaching practice.
